Breonna Taylor was an EMT and first-responder in Louisville, Kentucky, with plans of becoming a nurse. In the weeks before her death, she had been working on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, working at two local hospitals. She once said of her job, “Working in health care is so rewarding. It makes me feel so happy when I know I've made a difference in someone else's life.“ All of that was cut short on March 13, 2020, when plainclothes police officers burst into Breonna’s home in the middle of the night.
This piece was written in honor of Breonna and her last night, with the wish that it had been just another peaceful night for her, and with the hope now that it has left all of us awake.
