I come to the writing of this video-blog late today, at 4:38p New York City time. The reason is that I got caught up, rightfully so, in the sentencing of Derek Chauvin, the 19 year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department. The Floyd family, daughter 7 year old Gianna, brother Philonise and Terrence and nephew Brandon have been given deserved praise by the public and officials alike for emotional authenticity and ‘grace’ in dealing with the injustice that was so cruelly inflicted on their family during the year since GEORGE FLOYD’s death May 25 2020. Their willingness to let the world witness their grief and their commitment to transform their relative’s death into a weapon in demanding fairness in American Justice, police, courts and the prison systems, is remarkable and hopefully finally effective.
Given the White backlash and the so-called White Grievance that is overwhelming all fifty USA states this last year, if not also during the terrifying four years of their icon would-be dictator Trump, not to mention the birth of the Tea Party movement in the 1990s. And then there are the legislative efforts of the FreedomWorks and Americans for Prosperity, the Heritage Foundations and numerous other WHITE PRIVILEGE protection groups, supported by the Koch Brothers, David and Charles, but countless others.
There is little hope of meaningful legislative action from Congress even in the Biden & Harris majority control of the Presidency, Senate and the House. Striking down the Filibuster Rule is one option that does carry the risk of be used by Republicans when they are in power. But not advancing Biden’s progressive agenda risks disillusioning Democratic voters in 2022 and 2024 thus losing power, possibly for generations. There is not much time, just months to act.
It is important to note that the 2010 Citizens’ United decision allows thousand of tax-exempt 501c organizations to not disclose its donors and donations. This being one principal method, of several, that give Republicans the ‘dark money’ resources and power to influence elections and so to speak BUY POLITICIANS that serve White Supremacy. They are clever and they are devious, determined to use non-democratic means to keep this so-called imperfect Democracy in White control even if it undermines the sacredness of the stated major goal of the 1789 American Constitution to establish JUSTICE FOR ALL.
I will spare you more grimness except for one other example of how the Justice System unjustly targets Colored versus White offenders is the following of thousands of cases – In Texas, Crystal Mason was released from prison, convicted in 2011 on a federal felony charge related to tax fraud, served three years in prison, and when released on probation wanted to vote in 2017 elections. She was arrested for illegal voting, not knowing that felons under probation, are not allowed to vote, likely never in most states if at all. She was given a five year sentence for that so-called crime. She is out on bail and appeal; but government’s justice not only disrupts but destroys people’s ability to make their lives, their families and jobs secure and peaceful again. This is White privilege at work destabilizing Colored people’s lives and disenfranchising them in many ways including of course voting rights. They make the rules and they enforce them.
This is only one of thousands of small examples that are documented, over the course of 300 years. It is a sharp contrast that the first sentence yesterday in the Insurrection of the Capitol on January 6th 2021 was against a White woman Anna Morgan-Lloyd, who drove 576 miles [927 km], a 9 hour drive from home to Washington DC to join the Trump ‘Save America’ rally near the White House, later joining the all-White mob brutalizing the Capitol police and breaking into the Capitol. She was sentenced to 3 years probation, a fine of $500 and 120 hours of community service. This is White privilege at work protecting White people’s lives, restoring them to their lives with family and employment with minor consequences. Inconvenience not Incarceration.
