Brimming with vibrance and goofiness, Nay Nay is a spectacularly fun and bittersweet hybrid documentary that showcases the unbridled spirit and ambition of a production co-written by 14 year old Nathan Ross.

Known by his family as Nay Nay and his friends by the self-given nickname of Nate, Nathan Ross lives his day-to-day life as a typical middle schooler with comically aggressive video game battles, track meets, fleeting romantic interests, and his most treasured area of passion as well as the only thing he’s always had: basketball. Under the surface, however, Nathan is a matured person that has faced hardships few can truly understand.

Interviews and observational footage of life and family are shown throughout the filmmaking process of Nathan’s fictional plot. Inspired by the cinephilia of the titular Nay Nay and cousin-turned co-writer and director Rowen Mutt, they embark on a dangerous plot that promises ninjas, western themes, shocking betrayals, explosions, rap battles, whimsical day dreams, and startling plot twists. Nay Nay features reenactments and a full-blown fiction plot that Nathan crafts in the wake of real life tumults, both personal and societal.

Following a record year for protests against police brutality and oppressive racism that redefined Nathan’s childhood, we discover that shortly before filming started while Nathan and Rowen are getting ice cream, an old man in a cowboy hat called Nathan a racial slur. The racist old cowboy then becomes the main antagonist in Nathan’s ridiculous action narrative (coined in the film as DB, or the Diabolical Bumpkin), and he will stop at nothing until Nathan fails in making his dream production.

Despite the ruthless passion and determination that the creators have in seeing the absurd narrative to its completion, as well as capturing the intimate real-life events that inform the fiction, the question still remains: can these cousins and life-long best friends defeat the Diabolical Bumpkin and actually pull this thing off? Tune in when the film releases in 2022 to find out!
