Welcome to the fifth episode of Move of the Month! My concept is simple: on the last Sunday of each month, I share a dance movement I learnt during that month. The rule is that whatever movement I show should be new to me. It should be a move I had never done before or never knew how to do.

Last week, Aneta Zwierzynska taught a highly physical series of capoeira-inspired training sessions for contemporary dancers at The Place. I managed to take her class on four out of five days, and really enjoyed going through the same (or similar) exercises with more and more ease as the week went on. Yes, repetitons are key to progression, and practice eventually makes perfect! I gave this move a first go on Monday, got slightly better at it on Tuesday, filmed it on Wednesday and really got the hang of it on Friday. At the end of the week, I felt fit, strong, and performance-ready. And even though I have done very little capoeira so far, I'm keen to learn more of it!

PS: Aneta's top tip is to keep pushing the hips up at all times to execute this bridge roll smoothly. When you first try it, you will probably let your hips drop after the belly roll, and struggle to push yourself back up to the bridge. I did that too. The trick is to keep the hip joint extended all the way through. Good luck!
