During my time as an artist in resident at Jerome@Camargo I found myself collaborating with the mistral winds. Here is a small glimpse at the research and some thoughts:

body watani (or body as homeland) is a movement practice that unfolds when the body is in a state of deep listening to memories stored under the skin, to the lineages of ancestors that the body came from, to the body's history, and dancing from there. For me, simply dancing next to the Mediterranean sea invokes connection to my Palestinian and Sicilian roots that I have grown up displaced from, and in a way the sea feels like a home'land' to me.

To move with the wind as collaborator exercises the muscles of deep listening. From it's subtle breath to the fierce gusts of the Mistral, I dance in response to the push and pulls of an invisible, yet very real force. Similar to body watani, when you improvise many unconscious ripples from past suddenly bubble up in the body, and when you are listening, you can choose to embrace, respond, or resist what emerges. Just like you can when dancing with the wind.
