The theme of this class was FEAR. We talked a little bit about the alarming connection between fear and the epidemic of mental illness, the destructive role of fear in the dance and entertainment industries, which tremendously impacts all dancers and creatives, and how society has conditioned artists to inadvertently become addicted to fear and suffering. I opened the floor for students to share their experiences with fear and mental illness, talked about how to spot the triggers that tend to effect our personal mental health and different methods of combating them. I lead the class in some non-dance exercises and improv/free movement, and taught a combo to the song “my strange addiction” by Billie Eilish. This choreography tells the story of an artist's relationship with fear; how it strikes out of nowhere, misleads and lures you into wanting it, and then before you realize, fear has taken full control of your thoughts, decisions and actions, leaving you confused, discouraged and wondering what the hell just happened. We ended the class with an empowering chapter from the novel "Big Magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert, and I gave away some of my favorite and most useful tools for maintaining my mental health. This was the first of many Mental Health Awareness dance workshops, so stay tuned for the next one!
