“My name is Ron Miller and I’m the IT manager from Maryland Food Bank in Baltimore, Maryland. We’re celebrating our 40th anniversary this year. We lead the movement to end hunger in Maryland, and we supply food to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and faith-based organizations that serve Marylanders in need, and we supplement this work with outreach programs that provide direct food assistance. We have a Pantry On The Go that goes throughout the state. We have a Farm to Food Bank program, providing fresh food and we’re doing culinary training to help bring people out of hunger.

As a food bank, we communicate with both people in need, as well as, directly to our partners. One example of what we do here at the Maryland food bank is we take SNAP applications over the phone. SNAP is a supplemental nutrition assistance program – formerly called food stamps. SNAP is designed to be the main uh safety net for hungry people.

When our donation department found out that we could do computer-based phone systems, they said sign us up immediately. GTB kind of rose to the top as being a Maryland company. We were really looking for fiber optic connection to the internet. We were also looking to bring our communications into modernization with hosted voiceover IP and other programs that would allow us to use our cell phones and our computers to tie in with the network. We are using the Flexpoint phone service here. GTB has a dedicated internet for our phones and the quality is so much better.

When we’re closed for a holiday or whether we have a weather event, anybody can reach our donor services anytime and they have the Accession App on their phones and on their computers so that they’re able to take calls anytime.

When we are taking SNAP applications, we need to record their consent on the phone and Accession allows us uh to record that consent using the desktop application.

I find the Accession App to be very helpful is on my iPhone that I have tied directly to my hearing aids, so that when I get a phone call on my extension, it rings on my cell phone and I can answer that directly through the Accession App and hear the calling party through my hearing devices.

You know one thing that we’ve appreciated about GTB is the installation was so smooth and so personal. It was nice to have that relationship with the people who came and installed our system, and the ongoing relationship has just been very good.”
