Mappathon™ - A Projection Mapping Workshop for Beginners
Get hands-on instruction from accomplished NYC visiting educator & new media artist, CHiKA in this 2-day projection mapping marathon workshop for beginners —only at Austin School of Film, Spring 2020!
Projection mapping technology can turn almost any surface into a dynamic video display. Specialized software, nodul8, and madMapper are used to create animation, warp and blend projected images, so they fit perfectly on irregularly shaped “screens.”
— WHAT YOU LEARN —
This workshop introduces participants to the latest projection mapping technologies and techniques, enabling them to create site-specific interactive or static projection mapped installations.
Students will learn a practical foundation for creating installations using Modul8, MadMapper, and Vezer - no prior experience necessary. Students will recieve a free 30-day full access to Modul8, MadMapper, and Vezer to continue to develop their practice as part of their tuition.
This workshop is broken into three specific segements:
Education: The instructor will provide a step-by-step walkthrough each software. Participants will learn how to make animations from static images, mix video content, and projection map their creations onto specific 3-dimensional surfaces within the space.
Creative Execution: Participants will work together through an ideation phase to create a collaborative installation. They will experience the process of an art installation from concept to public presentation, further developing and exercising their newfound skills.
Presentation: Participants will have the opportunity to present their installation within the space. By seeing others interact with and respond to the piece, they will learn how projection mapping projects can be applied in innumerable ways, and benefit from constructive critique.
Topics covered but not limited to:
- How to make a live visual animation using Modul8
- Projection mapping exercise with madMapper
- Projection Mapping Set-up (gear)
- Projection Mapping with Music using Vezer
- Introducing MiniMad: Installation without a computer
- Creating a Projection Mapping Installation
— STUDENT SHOWCASE —
The student showcase will be hosted & held in our 4,000 square foot media gallery at the end of the workshop from 6:30pm-8pm.
Students are encouraged to invite whomever they like to come interact with their work. Austin School of Film will provide sounds, bites, and sips in celebration. #wearecreators
