John Van Kempen is a resident of Elbow Lake Minnesota and shares his thoughts on why he and his wife chose to Live Wide Open by staying in a small community.

Jerry: “Live Wide Open to me means try to encourage people to stick around in our small communities. I guess when my wife and I were making decisions 20 years ago, we decided we wanted to stick around I a small town, raise our kids. Now that our kids are older, they can do whatever anybody else can from a big town. They’re competitive in college, they’re competitive in their careers. They’ve had every opportunity, probably a lot more opportunities than city kids have had being in a small school. We’ve always believed its better to be a big fish in a small pond than the opposite of that.”
