The six openings of Baji Quan.

I spent a year studying with Long Sifu at Northern China Shaolin Martial Arts Academy. So, be aware that my perspective is limited by that time frame. There were two fundamental bases of Long Sifu's training:

1) Baji Quan Xiao Jia:

This is the fundamental form. It is the very first thing I learned, rather quickly, as this form had to be practiced in Zhang Zhuan mode at the beginning of every training in the morning and afternoon. Every posture had to be held for three breaths before exploding into the next posture. The group would always follow the elder brother. When he moved, everybody moved. After a few months of training, three breaths would take around 2 minutes. Doing the Baji Qi Gong would take an hour.

In the morning there was some running, conditioning and stretching though before we started the Baji Qi Gong:

Warm up and conditioning: youtu.be/VH7lNj8EpC8 (with also some sand bag work and partner work which is not shown in the video).

It should also be noted that early morning and after dinner we also had Taiji Quan. Long Sifu, mainly taught the simplified Taiji Quan (24, 42, 48 and some Taiji Sword).

This simple Taiji Jian form I learned form him. It was my very first introduction to Jian :-)

2) Red Sand Palm Qi Gong:

This had to be practiced ideally three times a day: morning, noon and evening. As training load was quite heavy, I only did it it twice a day, early morning and late afternoon before dinner (we had to squeeze it in outside of our collective training hours). With time, your breath would become longer, and thus your movements slower. So, after a few months, the Qi Gong would take an hour to practice. Long Sifu taught it in parts. I had to practice part 1 for a couple of weeks, then he would give the second part, and again after some weeks he would give the third part.

This was the fundamental basis which was then complemented by two basic sets of techniques:

3) Jin Gang Ba Shi and Liu Da Kai:

Initially, I learned the Qi Gong and Taiji Quan with Long Sifu, but started to learn my Baji Quan with one of his students who also had another lineage, Lin Sifu - there were slight differences. Here you can see the sets as practiced with Lin Sifu:

I would learn the first movement and then practice it for many days. Then I would get the second movement and again practice it for many days. So, it took quite a while to complete these two sets. They were really the basics. I will upload them separately also in the future, so they will be easier to access.

4) Then we learned some Pigua Zhang, which is the sister art of Baji Quan: youtu.be/5QWkKuwONKM

5) And Baji sword, actually Wudang Xuanmen Jian, but Long Sifu had presented it to us as Baji Jian: youtu.be/ArE6ic-Qejo

6) After this came Baji Quan:

7) After this came Mu Zi Quan:

After this, If I recollect it right, a partner form would have been on the programme.

Basically this form and conditioning training would go on at least for a year. Then little by little sand bag training would increase and little by little you would move from hitting the sand bags to hitting the trees. We had one elder student who was in that process. But he mainly trained alone, and I became the elder of our little group. He would continue Baji Qi Gong and Red Sand Palm Qi Gong, but spend much much time every day hitting trees for a few months. After this Long Sifu started to teach him some applications work. I only witnessed it from time to time but I cannot tell you more about it.

The further steps I do not know. Long Sifu was not very talkative in the way he taught me and I also did not ask too many questions as I just wanted to experience the practice as deep as possible.

I forgot: in the mornings it was recommended to also do an hour of basic sitting meditation. Usually I would do that before doing the Red Sand Palm Qi Gong and then joining the morning Taiji Quan.
