L'Dor V'Dor (From Generation To Generation) is an emotional two-hander starring Aaron Schwartz ( CBC's My 90 Year Old Roommate) and Tim Walker (CBC's The Neddeaus of Duqesne Island). Writer/Director Michael Tobin creates an extremely subtle and delicate atmosphere where a Jewish father and son address their generational differences, including interfaith marriage, circumcision, and the dilution of a sacred culture. Tobin's writing is melodic and natural. His direction yields a world that pays homage to his filmmaking heroes (Ingmar Bergman, Chantal Akerman, and Charlie Chaplin) through use of static wide shots, volatile exterior locations, prolonged takes with heavy dialogue, and moments of wordless action allowing for both movement of story and observation of character. The music is provided by Polaris-winning/Juno-winning musician Jeremy Dutcher, whose debut record (Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa) lands as Tobin's #1 favourite album of 2018. Cinematographer Adam Crosby's images honour Tobin's vision by portraying Port Stanley Beach as the environmental reflection of the story - a place where precarious beauty can quickly turn dark and ominous. Tobin exhibits his unique voice in L'Dor V'Dor through meticulous craftsmanship, homage to past masters and having courage to be still.
