Dr. Melinda Smith lives with cerebral palsy and comes from a professional background of mentoring and consultancy in the disability and education sectors. In 2008, Melinda began promoting the health and well-being outcomes of dance and movement for people who have physical disabilities.

Melinda moves with her camera. This short film is an exploration of body and places. Exploring the physicality of the environment, creating and claiming her space.

What is the meaning of being here? There is beauty in the way she interacts with everyday nature. The connection between the body and the land. The audience is invited to feel intimately the strength and the joy of dance and different bodies.

'Knees and shrubs' is my second film that I have created and directed independently. Working with a camera is very exciting for me. I feel that I can do whatever I want and then edit it in the way that suits me. It has freed my imagination. It seems like there are no barriers to what I want to do and what I want to say and how I want the environment around me to be. Making 'Knees and Shrubs' I wanted to experiment moving in nature and exploring the space with my body. I was pleasantly surprised at every step of the way. i have created the soundscape and the narrative in the place where i moved my body. This invited me to connect in the moment and feel the emotion and the beauty.
