Kiros’ story: Family reunited after three years
Part 1: 'Preparing to Leave'

This is the story of how the Eritrean Kiros was separated from his family for three years with no information of their whereabouts, and how the family finally managed to reunite in France thanks to the French authorities and the assistance of the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR and French NGOs. The video is divided into three parts.

Kiros and his wife Adiam are Eritrean refugees who met and married in a camp in Sudan. Because of the lack of opportunities, they moved to the capital Khartoum, hoping to earn a living. That proved exceptionally difficult and Kiros left for South Sudan, where he worked for a year. When he returned to Khartoum, his wife and children were gone, having left for Europe via Libya. Their situation in Sudan had become intolerable but Adiam had not been able to contact her husband. Though she had no idea where he was, she resolved to find him and reunite with him. Arriving in Libya, he was detained. After a few years, he managed to arrange for his passage, he departed, but the weather became so rough that the boat returned to Libya. Fortunately, Kiros while in detention was visited by UNHCR and discovered that his wife was in France and was searching for him. His wife had applied for family reunification with the French authorities. After a brief stop in Niger, he was reunited with his family after three appalling years of separation.

Telling the Real Story is an information campaign to raise awareness about the dangers involved in using the smuggling route, including through Libya. The campaign is targeting people in different countries who are planning to undertake this dangerous journey. The Telling the Real Story campaign also aims at providing information on alternative opportunities to irregular movement like, in this case, family reunification.
