Juneteeth commemorates the day Black Americans were emancipated from slavery on June 19th, 1865. Since then, Black communities all over the United States have observed the day in different ways. Here in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, a group of Black Artists, Healers and Cultural workers answered a national call to organize Black War Dances. We held a special ceremony, movement protest, and collective practice on the banks of the Mississippi River to embody, activate, protect, educate, and preserve our Black Embodied Traditions.
Reaching into the Emancipation Performance Traditions throughout the Diaspora, we met Friday's sunrise to signify our breakthrough from racial capitalism, the colonization of black art traditions, as well centering Black joy within this Movement.
