We wanted to share all of the work that went into our Juneteenth animation project in this process video. I can't thank all of the artists involved enough for lending their creative expertise to this project. I couldn't be more proud of what we created.

Here's a little write up from our producer of this project describing what this project means to us & our creative process.

In celebrating Juneteenth we wanted to embody the duality of the black human experience in America in regards to our joy coupled with fear.
We were elated to recruit a cast of all black talents in telling our black story. We acknowledge the lack of representation of women in the industry so we wanted to have an equal number of women & men working on this project. We intentionally created opportunities for some that are green in the industry to work with & learn from artists that have been successfully working at a high level for years. The experience of working together was profound. It was the first time each artist was working with more than two black artists on a project. Everyone’s opinions & suggestions mattered. There were no egos on this team. We learned, taught, & created this piece as one unit.

We wanted to showcase the joy our people continue to express despite the pain & heaviness we feel due to the constant inhumanity of our current governing & policing systems. The four characters pushing the Juneteenth Holiday flag forward represent our current struggle of fighting for our human right to be treated equally in order to truly be free. We purposely did not have the characters get our “freedom” flag completely erected because we as Black Americans know the fear associated with our blackness. And the inequalities we face due to our blackness. Therefore we as a people are not free so to display the flag completely up would be a lie. The reflections of our ancestors is our way of acknowledging we would not have the “freedom” we have now if it was not for the fights & struggles they’ve endured to get us here.
We have different ethnicities of Americans cheering us on in solidarity to make it known that Juneteenth is not a black holiday it’s an American holiday we all should celebrate it in solidarity. We tried to reflect past & present to show progress as well as similarities. What remains is we will “march on till victory is won.”

That being said action needs to take place. It’s as easy as calling or emailing your mayor & local officials demanding true equality by ending Qualified Immunity. 5calls.org makes this easy with contact information, scripts, & the issues located in one place. The black vote is currently being suppressed in many states to silence our plead for reform. We also hope you show your solidarity in voting out current officials and vote in new representatives that will bring change to improve the American experience for us & all people of color. All lives can’t matter until black lives matter.
