This piece seeks to question the conventional concept of time. The linear conception of time is arguably a colonial inheritance that empowers those who call themselves owners of progress. To experience life according to the ruthless movement of the clock can be a daunting experience. The piece attempts to confront time, demonstrating the intricate coexistence of past, present, and future.
The project tackles the experience of time inspired by a Brazilian (sub)culture and religion known as Candomblé. This religious practice has no commitment to the traditional concept of time. Entities and Gods are among us in the past, present and future.
The short film is embodied by Iroko, one of the oldest Orixás. In Candomblé, an Orixá is a God or a Goddess. Iroko is often portrayed as a sacred tree, at times, as the world’s first tree. The tree is the connection between time, life and ancestry. Iroko is the Lord of Time and incarnates time in opposition to the clock. From a cosmological perspective, the concept of time represented by Iroko is both the memory of ancestry and the future to come. It is the embodiment of coexisting times.
