Song title - Sincerely Jane by Janelle Monae (instrumental)
My first stop motion project. I was quite unsure going into this film since this was my first experience animating in this medium but I like what I created. For this project based around a person we admire I chose singer Janelle Monae. I loce that in her music she explores the experiences and struggles of black people through slavery and modern day. A main focus in her work is movement of Afrofuturism where black people are portrayed living in visions of a space-age future where they are better off while avoiding negative narratives and stereotypes put upon them. She depicts herself as an oppressed android in her music videos as a metaphor for the discrimination black people still face. Other themes in her music involve the intersection of technology, the future and liberation. To match her themes in my work, I wanted to create a piece involving characters being freed and released from the confines of an advanced society’s expectation. I collected materials like tin foil and wire to replicate a robot-like Janelle Monae for the main focus of my piece. Also I created 3 more smaller robots to represent a younger generation of individuals who would be helped by Janelle’s influence. While animating these characters, I found it difficult for them to stand straight on their wire legs so they kept leaning when I tried to capture them. Unfortunately, I was unable to solve this problem so the robots still lean in the final piece. If I could go back and improve I would use other materials to help, make sure my characters are sturdy enough when filming.
