Although we received many potential ways of collecting our thoughts and ideas for creating our midterm solo pieces, my process began how Nia Austin-Edwards from SLM Dances suggested, by just going in front of the mirror and moving. I found the inspiration of my piece the day we brought our speical items into class. I brought in a book called The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur. She has a theme throughout the book that states, “People too must wilt, fall, root, and rise in order to bloom.” From that moment I knew that my solo would reflect a growth process, because through trials and tribulations, people always grow. I knew I wanted my dance to use time as an intregal element to symbolize how doing the same thing over and over only results in the same outcome just at different phases of life, with this I made use of repetition. As Rupi Kaur breaks down the different stages of a flower’s growth process, I knew I wanted to implement levels, directions, and planes. However, I truly wanted to convey a flow of different energies as I grew through my dance and the different stages.
My work reflects exactly who I am, today. I am a work in progress, undaunted by the fight. As I was growing up, my life seemed somewhat perfect, until life actually happened to me and that idea of what I clung to, was so distant. I experienced years when I was very uncomfortable, physically and emotionally. I can now appreciate that stage because that was when I started to grow, I started to flourish in my own unpredictability and shortcomings. I started to become and discover me, and love all parts that I bring or never show up with. This solo reflects more of the lifestyle and peace I have developed with my journey of life. This solo reflects growth, as it is essential to my life.
I believe I embodied African Diaspora movement aesthetics as I use movements that represent pain, hope, and optimism. African Diaspora movement aesthetics always tell the stories of strife and struggle, but never fall short of leaving a lasting impression of peace; whether that peace is invested in the faith of a higher power, or the hope of better days. I also abandon the use of traditional "standard" dance techniques (the use of pointing toes, straight lines, etc.)
