How Does It Start is a three-and-a-half-minute film that takes the line as a conceptual metaphor to speak about cultural loss situated in generational gaps. Using archival photographs from the Mazal Holocaust Collection, the film asks how a linear moving image sequence can express both a forward and backward directional history with beaks and disjuncture. As a moving image camera scours over archival photographs, the tension between the forward movement of time and the stasis of loss compresses a national and personal history.
