What is the purpose of this exercise?
To improve our ability to stabilize and control movement at the hip joint.
Why might you utilize this?
The hip joint is a ball and socket joint with a significant amount of joint movement. Overall this is a very, very good thing and is a key part of why we can do so much with it.
However, it can also become a problem if we have poor control of those movements. This exercise provides a way for us to better isolate and work on our ability to stabilize the hip joint as it essentially removes our ability to stabilize ourselves from the knee and ankle.
From a performance perspective: Having a stable base to operate from will improve our ability to accept and generate force. So, if we spend a significant amount of time running, cutting, or balancing in our athletic task then being able to well stabilize the hip will be of benefit.
From a pain perspective: In individuals with highly flexible hips (cheerleaders, gymnasts, dancers, etc.) a potential contributor to maintenance of the pain condition may be poor stability or control of that movement. In those cases, improving hip stability may assist in recovery.
