What is the purpose of this exercise?
To strengthen the hip flexors – or the muscles which bring the thigh toward the chest.
Why would you utilize it?
From a performance perspective: The hip flexors are important for any athletic task that requires us to advance the leg forward in front of us (think running/sprinting) or raise the thigh up (gymnasts, skating, etc.) Improving hip flexor strength, endurance, and power may all be of benefit depending on the specific sport and movement task.
From a pain perspective: Hip flexor weakness can be a contributing factor to a variety of hip pain conditions. The clearest being issues related to the illiopsoas muscle (like in a strain) or tendon (like in a tendinopathy) In both cases a key component of any good rehab program is strengthening of this muscle group.
