What is the purpose of this exercise?

To strengthen the hip flexors – or the muscles which bring the thigh toward the chest. Specifically, this exercise variation is meant to improve our ability to quickly generate force (the term for which is muscle power)

Why would you utilize it?

From a performance perspective: The hip flexors are important for any athletic task that requires us to advance the leg forward in front of us (think running/sprinting) or raise the thigh up (gymnasts, skating, etc.) Improving hip flexor strength, endurance, and power may all be of benefit depending on the specific sport and movement task.

From a pain perspective: Hip flexor weakness can be a contributing factor to a variety of hip pain conditions. The clearest being issues related to the illiopsoas muscle (like in a strain) or tendon (like in a tendinopathy) In both cases a key component of any good rehab program is strengthening of this muscle group.
