The scenario is a drunk patron being asked to leave a bar. The classic SPEAR System drills had already been completed so both role-players we warmed up. They’re working “the Jack in the box” moment. That’s when you suspect shit is about to happen but you’re not sure what or when. This is very subtle and is missed by many when they do scenario training. Watch how realistic the attack is. It actually triggers a real flinch.
⠀⠀
Size matters in a fight but so does physics and that’s why the SPEAR position of FINGERS SPLAYED/OUTSIDE 90 keeps the attacker at distance even though he much larger.
⠀⠀
In the next iteration the defender would launch counter attacks.
⠀⠀
We build drills in organic layers. The brain learns best and fastest like this. The focus when we conduct scenario-based training is to reverse engineer movement based on credible (not, incredible) threats. That means we remove the tendency to spar or attempt sport techniques. We focus on the SPEAR System motto: “everything is possible but not everything is probable” in other words, we socratically ask, what’s ‘probably’ going to happen when a drunk, belligerent patron is told no more drinks? Spinning hook kick or sucker punch? Violent shove or Jab Jab cross? (*as always, we aren’t rebuking techniques or styles, we are merely sharing decades of research on how to make you safer during a violent encounter.)
⠀⠀
The stages:
⠀⠀
1) Replicate a credible threat
2) include realistic pre-contact dialog
3) Reverse engineer it into a mini scenario
4) Use common street assaults
5) Use dynamic scenario gear so role-player movement is fast & hard
6) Don't spar, keep the engagement short so tactical stamina & endurance is positive by-product of the drill
7) Repeat over and over. This helps train neural patterning which improves perception speed & decreases reaction time.
