'Hidden Within' is centred on the life of an ordinary English woman, her story is told from her point of view, in her own words, giving the audience a ringside seat into not only the events in her external life but also a deep insight into her internal struggle.

Carrie Sullivan is a single mother, who has come through an abusive marriage and is stuck in a job she finds completely uninspiring. Even though the maternal side of her life with teenage daughter, Lainie, and her long-standing friendship with the irrepressible Kat, bring her pleasure, Carrie has nothing more. In a futile attempt to restore some semblance of a personal life, she had begun a sordid relationship with brutish, Phil Weeks. But as the story begins, even satisfying his sexual gratification has become nothing more than performing of a series of physical acts, which pleasure him, but leave her even more emotionally numb.

When there seems no hope of change, Carrie is sent on a course, which involves her travelling alone to London. Although the prospect doesn't particularly inspire her, Carrie sees it as a welcome break in her routine. On her first night, while on her way back to her hotel, she overhears a frightening verbal exchange and although wary at first, when she hears a woman screaming, she feels compelled to act.

Carrie becomes involved in the argument when the woman strikes her companion causing him injury, before she passes out. On hearing the arrival of others, the man, Frank Loomis, bundles both women into his car and drives away at speed. Only when there is some semblance of calm inside the vehicle, he asks Carrie to check on his companion, when she glances towards the back seat, she recognises the woman as the controversial American actress, Vanessa Bonart. Frank explains he is her security guard and he had no choice but to take action to avoid the unwelcome attention of an omnipresent paparazzi.

Back at Vanessa's hotel, Carrie meets the actress's imperious PA, Marcella Forbes, who has little time for her, seeing her as nothing more than an unwelcome intrusion. Later that evening, after a further encounter with Vanessa, this time it's Carrie who is struck and she leaves in disgust. However, at Vanessa's insistence, the two women meet again which ultimately leads to a sexual experience, which unexpectedly opens the door to Carrie's emotions.

Forced back to reality, Carrie attends the course where she meets the gentlemanly Matt Croft, who although she genuinely likes, she also believes is 'too good' for someone like her. Although perhaps disappointed, Matt insists the two of them will remain friends and they part, promising to stay in touch.

On returning home, Carrie resolves to make changes to her life, but she soon struggles to find her way and decides she needs to see Vanessa again. Through her own patience and persistence, also unwittingly helped by Lainie, the women finally meet again and the chemistry between them is even more potent. It also becomes clear, the times they are sharing are becoming more intense emotionally, which even the more sexually liberated Vanessa finds challenging. Inevitably, they have to say one final goodbye as not only are they forced to accept they live in different worlds, but the intrusive eyes of one particularly persistent photographer mean it could only be a matter of time before they are discovered.

Once back in her normal routine, Matt unexpectedly reappears and begins a relationship with Kat, who, until this time, had long believed, she was destined never to have anyone for longer than a night. But Carrie encourages them both and is happy to see them fall in love and start to make a life together.

After some time, Carrie embarks on a new relationship with workmate, Daniel. He is charming, funny and attentive, their relationship seems to have the potential to last, but for Carrie, there is something unknown lacking even though, he satisfies every possible need in her. So she decides perhaps she destined to be alone, but she is stronger, no longer a victim, or incapable of feeling anything other than disappointment. As meeting Vanessa had not only allowed her to fully experience emotions again, but had also helped to finally put the ghosts of her past to rest.
