Helen Frankenthaler belongs to the second generation of american expressionist painters, and more precisely to the Color Field Painting movement. In the early 1950s, at the time when this painting has been made, she experiments with a new method of painting – the “soak-stain” technique–developed by pouring paint straight from pots and diluted with turpentine on the canvas, as if to ‘tint’ it.

While it is a fluid form of painting and “too feminine” for Harold Rosenberg–the Action Painting theorist–it did not prevent Helen Frankenthaler to impose herself within her contemporary pictorial vanguard, then dominated by male stars. Beside, the Painter Louis Morris underlined her decisive role by saying that she creates the “bridge between Pollock and what was possible”.
