.
Many survivors of trauma feel shame or self-blame, like for not being able to protect themselves or their loved ones. Or, they feel ashamed for having debilitating anxiety and distress well after the traumatic event is over, however, this shame and blame belong only to the perpetrator of the violence.....not to those who were victimized.
.
Work to believe that the shame is not yours to carry and also that the cause of your condition does not reside within you.
.
If you want to heal, you are going to have to check your ego at the door.....because it will only try to tell you that there’s something wrong with you. However, there is nothing wrong with you. The reactions that you’re experiencing because of your trauma are only responses— they’re not who you are.
.
When healing from trauma, don’t try to do it alone, either. It’s vital to connect with others often and to avoid isolating yourself (even though that might be your natural inclination). Ultimately, surrounding yourself with those who love and support you will be invaluable on your journey to healing.
.
I also highly encourage you to seek the assistance of trained professionals to help you through this. You could attend individual or group therapy.....or both!
.
Whatever it is that you decide upon, make sure that you receive the help of someone who is fully licensed and trained in working with trauma. This almost goes without saying......but you should also trust and feel comfortable with whoever you end up seeing, too.
.
Treatments for trauma vary.....but you will likely end up focusing on a culmination of psychoeducation, stress management techniques, the release of body memories, as well as suppressed emotions that are causing your physical and psychological pain.
.
Next, keep in mind that trauma is remembered in the body, which means that you’ll have to do more than just talk it out to heal. Because of this, I suggest practicing mindfulness/meditation.
.
Meditation helps you to quiet the monkey chatter of the mind, to experience wisdom, acceptance as well as a new appreciation for life. Since trauma gets stored inside the body, in addition to therapy sessions.....the body will greatly benefit from entering moments of mindfulness.
.
Try also incorporating mindful movement into your daily routine, such as yoga and other forms of physical activity.....because they release endorphins, and help you to feel safe.
.
Honestly, it is crucial that you regularly engage in physical activity, as this will help you to create positive feelings which have been broken down from past trauma.
.
Ultimately, you must love yourself enough to believe that you deserve a life that is free from pain and suffering. Know that with faith and willingness to take the necessary steps, you’ll experience new levels of joy, appreciation, and wellness once you’ve healed.
.
Sending you love on your journey.
