July 2020
Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd between 125th and 127th Streets
Collaboration is at the core of Harlem Park to Park's mission to serve our community; and the effort to bring a Black Lives Matter Street Mural to Harlem was no exception!
Harlem Park to Park was proud to partner with Got To Stop Social Impact Agency & Valinc PR for this initiative. It was a beautiful journey of creativity and purpose; and truly took a village to achieve.
This is our tribute to the numerous members of the Harlem community who contributed to the success of this historical moment!
The Vision:
From the beginning, the vision for the BLM Harlem Mural included an extensive community outreach strategy to ensure that the Harlem community was not merely spectators to the creation of the mural, but instead actual contributors to this historic event.
Over 300 members of the Harlem community assisted in this effort as executive team members, event producers, political supporters, architectural designers, commissioned artists, community painters, volunteers, media partners, brand sponsors and more.
The Location:
Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd between 125th Street and 127th Street was selected as the location for the Black Lives Matter Harlem Street Mural. Named after the first African American Congressman to be elected from New York and one who served as a national spokesman on civil rights and social issues, the corridor is adjacent to the Harlem State Office building, also named after Adam Clayton Powell Jr to commemorate his civil rights legacy.
The Design:
The Black Lives Matter Harlem Street Mural took one week to install beginning Thursday, July 2nd to the unveiling on Wednesday, July 8th and features:
Northbound Side of ACP: Original artwork created by (8) Harlem Artists who designed two letters each of the Black Lives Matter message
Southbound side of ACP: Community mural painted by 22 local organizations representing 170+ Harlem community members who were assigned individual letters of the Black Lives Matter message to be painted Red, Black and Green
