My parents met over twenty years ago in a discotheque called "Black and White", located in Guarda, Portugal, in the 1980s. My father described me over the years what it turned out to be the first memory he has of my mother, and it was this particular image he kept of her dancing alone to Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' "Down on Mission Street", wearing a dusty pink cardigan.
The year I turned 21 years old, I decided to travel to the city in which they met so many years ago, and I tried to find the exact place where my mother once danced.
In this video clip, I am getting ready to do a performance piece I called "21 years of love and pain", that took action in what now remains of the discotheque "Black and White". In the performance I danced to the song that was playing when they both met, in the exact location in which they met, wearing a dusty pink cardigan, like my father described. I danced 21 times to "Down on Mission Street", each time corresponding for a year of my life since my birth, because my father's memory is the closest I have ever been to finding a reason for my own existence.
In the video I am looking for the perfect pair of earrings to wear for the occasion, kept inside my mother's box of old earrings. The song playing is the song I listened to in the performance: "Down on Mission Street" by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. The video was filmed in a Video8.
