In game implementation of sound in Unity using Wwise. The different footsteps sounds for when the character steps of different surfaces is being controlled via the Switch Container in Wwise. The Events property of the character animation in Unity references the event in Wwise to which the footsteps switch container has been assigned.

The change in the materials of the footsteps takes place via scripts added to the material colliders (triggers) in Unity. These scripts reference the AkSoundEngine that is used to set the switch material based on which collider the character enters / exits.

The sound of creaking floor boards and footsteps has been randomised to create a sonically interesting environment.
The John Lemon tutorial project available on Unity Learn was used for this implementation.
