What drives Francine Simonin? What inner forces have propelled her to attain her stature as one of our most important contemporary painters and engravers?
Marilú Mallet takes us into the renowned artist’s creative process, and into her own quest as a filmmaker to find the common denominator of the creative act. The film takes us beyond the fragile, mortal individual artist, to a state of transcendence achieved through the work of art.
By filming Francine Simonin in her various work spaces, -in Montreal, Lausanne, Barcelona and Roussillon, often in the company of her precious collaborators, -the filmmaker examines the artist’s action in detail. With years of practice impressed on to her being, Simonin seems to perform an initiation dance, encircling her canvasses from all sides as she paints. For her, painting is not intellectual. It is visceral. It allows her to escape “that awful carnal frame that always lets me down” and to witness the birthing and morphing of ideas that give the impulse to her gestures, which are the source of all her work. “The artist’s body, says Simonin, when it gives out what it has taken in from its visual experience of Nature... That’s the creative act !”
