In 2016, high-school student Alex Weber began collecting golf balls from the ocean near the world famous golf course off Pebble Beach, California. To-date she has amassed over 50,000 balls, and recently published a scientific manuscript demonstrating how golf balls break up in the surf zone and release toxic microplastics into the marine environment. Alex reached out to CountercurrentArt.org to use these golf balls to create a large-scale sculpture to educate the public about this unique issue and the inspire them to take action against plastic pollution in their local communities.
