The Chicago chapter of @extinctionrebellion , which is calling for the declaration of a Climate Emergency, has been growing quickly since its founding in January, having carried out half a dozen non-violent direct actions around the city. Today’s event is designed to recognize that Governor @jbpritzker has the vision and talent to make Illinois a leader in large-scale climate action. XR Chicago members are handing out a list of Pritzker's progressive legislative successes but pointing out that these successes do not include initiatives that address the climate crisis, either through divestment from fossil fuels or through declaring a climate emergency, which many government bodies throughout the world have done. “We need government at all levels to declare a Climate Emergency before it’s too late,” says Phillips. "That means making large-scale changes as soon as possible to reduce and eventually eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels.
