This experiment is part of a series titled Cinematic Experiments created by Margie Medlin with dance makers, Vicki Van Hout and Patrick Lucky Lartey, cinematographer Jane Castle, lighting designer, and media artist Fausto Brusamolino. The research took place as part of short residencies at FORM Dance Projects and the Creative Practice Research Unit at the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia, in January 2018. Funded by the Emerging and Experimental fund of the Australia Council for the Arts.

By inserting and subtracting time and using postproduction zooms this experiment seeks to structure and intersect cinematic techniques with four dance phrases, where the dancer-maker Vicki Van Hout slow-motion martial art play with smashing a4 paper. The editing and motion manipulation of Experiments No.20 is intended to create a loop. Looping rhythms have a precedent in the artworks from the 1970’s expanded cinema movement like; Malcolm Le Grice’s, Berlin Horse (1970) and Lisa Rodes’ Light Music (1975) that used the abstract technique of a reparative looping of frames to conceptually replace the concept of sequential time with images and musical scores. It was in this period that Western viewers became hungry for distorted perceptions of movement, duration and reality initiated by the apparatus. Like the radical experiments of the 1920s cinema such as in René Clair’s Entr’act (1924) cinematic looping could also be said to parallel an abstraction of modern dance structures which contributed to a breaking down of the boundaries between artforms.

The Cinematic Experiments project has created a moving image media library as source material for further experiments. The first twenty-three experiments function individually and as a collection. They can also be discussed as only the first process of two-part practice where the first part is to create the library and the second is to use the library as a malleable material for multi-screen public artwork. The processes for the creation of the library crossed the boundaries of analogue film and digital video. Experiments No.16A, B, C, No.20 and No.22 are the source material for Experiments No.25 A and B
