In the start of the film, a young lady is walking into her room with a distressed look on her face. She paces in the corner of her room. The overall lighting is dim and low. There is silence and the camera movement is pacing with the girl. She takes her phone out to make a phone call. The girl walks over to a mirror on the wall and stares at herself. After some dialogue to keep the narrative going, there is a cut to an external setting with the young woman and a little boy. They walk during the day in a beautiful neighborhood. The two are distant from each other and the space between them is resemblance to the overall theme. Soon after several jump cuts, the two arrive at a birthday party with the sounds of little kids in the back. Once the sister leaves her little brother alone at this party, the boy walks into a backyard with several other boys. There are parents sitting in a circle conversing; completely unaware of their kids. There are 3 other boys plus the little brother. The little brother walks up to the snack table and starts stuffing his face with all the junk food he can fit in his mouth. A boy with curly hair walks up to the little boy and asks him to follow him to a dark room. The screen turns black. There is an offscreen countdown to one. Suddenly, the camera is in a small room filled with yelling, screaming, flashing lights and chaos. The little boy is being attacked with screams and silly string by these bullies. The screen returns to black.
My intended effect with the first half of the film is to create the narrative about a young woman struggling with a decision she has to make. We’ve all had to make a tough choice. Some choices are harder than others for different reasons. She faces a battle within herself that is almost endless. To create this endless dread, I included multiple jump cuts and edits that made the scene almost feel like one big loop. With the second half of the film, the external approach was to add a level of social tension. This little boy should not be left alone at a birthday party. Maybe he doesn’t know anyone there, or he has social anxiety and needs some guidance. I want the audience to make their own judgements about the situation before the bully scene. The effect of having a black screen with a countdown is POV shot. I wanted the viewer to feel like they were in that space with the boy. I want the audience to feel the pain and embarrassment he must be feeling.
I really wanted most of the film to be a handheld project. I appreciate the steadiness of a tripod but I feel much more tension and confusion when the camera is in my hands. I also wanted to use more close up shots in the bedroom sequence with the young woman. She’s making a decision that she knows will not be an easy one. Having this bedroom almost feel like it’s closing in on her is why I wanted the camera close to her face. The shot of the camera facing her in the mirror adds a level of the human spirit and a sense of evil in all of us.
