Paula Martiesian
I often fantasize about what the world might look like without man in it. There would be no street grids or concrete block buildings. Instead vines and trees would cover the earth and water would ebb and flow free of the plastic excrement that weighs it down so heavily.

I’m drawn to movement in nature, to the extreme exaggerated green spaces that still exist both in our urban neighborhoods and in the wild. In my painting I seek to convey an uncomfortable powerful beauty that is not safe or controlled or carefully cultivated.

Paula Martiesian is a lifelong painter and arts advocate. She along with her husband Kenneth J. Carpenter created, published and designed Quix Art Magazine (1991-1999). Along with Catherine Bert of the Bert Gallery and Teresa Level of the former Flux Gallery, she founded Gallery Night Providence. She now works as the exhibitions curator for the BankRI Galleries. She is represented in Rhode Island by the Bert Gallery in Providence and the Charlestown Gallery in Charlestown.
