Spanning 80 non-stop hours from 5-8 December, Holly Durant presents DERMAL DIMENSIONS, an anthropological suite of choreography part of the ongoing series WORLD WORKS. Durant will inhabit an expansive sculptural installation at RMIT’s city campus, that extends through bodies and beyond materials and genres in order to carve social experience spanning from the banal to the unexpected. With her stream-of-consciousness performances, Durant seeks to reclaim, unmask and transcend conventional paradigms..

With DERMAL DIMENSIONS, Durant privileges the experience of being a body in space and place, crafting sites for live music and DJs, through to deep rest and movement classes. Humorous, dark and episodic, the embodied encounters of DERMAL DIMENSIONS explore the ways in which bodies (and their expression) are confined, pushed, manipulated and cajoled by systems of power.

Exploring ideas of embodiment, co-presence and ‘worlding,’ the inhabited installation blurs the boundaries between subject and environment, between private and public experience. Layered sensorial environments and disobedient gestures transform the body, questioning the concept of the ‘blank’ body onto which narratives and meaning are projected.

By centring fluid arrangements and encounters, rather than self-contained or fixed symbols and scenarios, Durant confronts and negotiates structural obstacles with the power of the body.
