His Voice

“The other disciples told Thomas that they had seen Jesus, but Thomas doubted—’Except I shall see …, I will not believe.’ Thomas needed the personal touch of Jesus. When His touches come, or how they come, we do not know; but when they do come they are indescribably precious. ‘My Lord and my God!’” -Oswald Chambers

“And Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.” (Matthew 8:22)

Many are those who begin the quest at the encouragement of other trekkers, trusted peers whose opinions matter; but for those who journey deep into the trek after the Serving King, the encouragement of trusted others can never sustain. The trek is simply too difficult to endure under the tutorage and encouragement of anyone but the Serving King. Learning to hear His voice, amidst the voices of competing ‘trusted peers’, can be tricksy for those plodding along immersed in the fraternity of trusted peers.

Therein lies the problem for the many who dream of joining those trusted peers deep into the being of Jesus, as the mob pushes them along, deeper and deeper into crushing challenges that lay ahead. These trusted peers, loyal as they may be, cannot sustain you as the degree of difficulty in following Him continues to increase; especially, when His demands seem so outrageous. Nor will Jesus allow those who hear His voice to remain behind, caring for the novices, those well-intentioned trekkers, who follow the ‘flock’, doing what sheep do, yet never hearing the Shepherd call them by name.

Eventually, every trekker has their moment of shock, disbelief at what Jesus is suggesting. It is unavoidable for those who trek deep into the quest after Jesus. The trek is simply too overwhelming. So, you must pause now and again, break free from the ‘flock’ which is not yet your own, and listen carefully. Have you heard Him call you by name, or are you simply caught in the ‘flock’, heeding the call of well-intentioned trekkers who have heard their name whispered by the Shepherd, assuming you have heard the Shepherd call yours as well? You dare not simply get caught up in the movement of the flock, unless you also hear His voice, for He leads them to places only the ‘called-out ones’ dare to traverse in the days yet ahead. Listen and love on in the way of the Serving King…
