Seeing Clearly

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” -Hellen Keller

And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” And He did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
(Matthew‬ ‭13:57-58‬)‬‬‬‬‬

When Jesus encountered the blind man in Luke, Chapter 18, He asked him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The man answered, “Lord I want to see!” Jesus then said to him, “Receive your sight, your faith has healed you.”

In this myriad of strange and unusual events we call life, it is easy to dismiss or even be offended by things and people we do not understand. We have the tendency to question the motivation and intention of people who might even be trying their best to help us or others. “Who are you to tell me?” Sound familiar?

The contrast between the response of the people of Jesus’ hometown, whom He freely offered the gift of His presence, and the blind man, desperate to truly see, is dramatic. The hometown crowd were so close-minded and rigid they could not fathom someone, who they knew so well, having such a life-transforming experience, the kind of experience that changes a carpenter into a rabbi. They missed the significance of who Jesus really was.

The blind man, on the other hand, was so desperate for sight, he was completely open to the possibility that the One who stood before him was the Son of God. He didn’t miss Jesus and, as a result, received his sight. In fact, it is such a drastic contrast that the Bible says because of the lack of faith in the people of Jesus’ hometown, He just could not help them. Sometimes a lack of physical sight is not the real blindness at all. Clearly, the blind man saw realities the townsfolk could not imagine.

May we, the modern-day people of God, always be open to the movement of God around us, even when it is shockingly unusual, occurring in the lives of the least likely people. May we always be open enough and have the desperate humility to cry out, “Lord, I want to see clearly, give us sight so we never miss You.” Risk seeing what others miss as you love on in the way of the Serving King…
