DAY 1254. When I was in art school for photography I spent most of my time in the dark. To this day I sometimes feel I can see better with my eyes closed.

The red light of the black and white darkroom trained me to see under its subtle light, but it was the darkroom for color photography— a pitch black dark— that truly illuminated my sense of sight. Working within a space totally devoid of light taught me how to combine my sense of touch with the eyes of my mind. Seeing like this requires a calm and centered heart, and once you give yourself over to the darkness, it offers a vision surprisingly keen.

Sometimes when I need to call on this deeper kind of seeing, I close my eyes to open my vision. In today’s form I’m using the Stilling Mind Needle to practice an Earth Element form called Tracing the Field. It takes skill to maintain relaxed hands while switching position of the yin yang palms (one skyward and one earthward). In first learning how to do this smoothly, I found that closing my eyes allowed me to move much more fluidly and seamlessly than when my eyes were open.

Interestingly, there’s another link this form has to my days in the photo lab. The motion of the arc mimics the exact movement used during the processing of negatives. While the film reels were in the developing tank, I’d move the cylindrical drum in an arc just like the one you see me describing in this form. We’d call this movement agitation.

When I realized this connection (just recently, actually), I found it strikingly relevant to the qualities this Qigong form cultivates. We use the yin yang palms to smooth out the kinks and wrinkles in one’s field of Qi. We call on this form particularly during times of disruption, change, and unknown— states of disequilibrium brought on by transition.

I find it remarkable that the act of agitation is the very method by which negatives receive a balanced and smooth application of the developer bath when processing reels of film. By this example, we can look to agents of agitation— whether other people, outer circumstances, internal thought processes, or whatever it is that agitates us— and we can choose to see them as opportunities to cultivate inner balance, steadiness, and tranquility no matter what disruptions occur externally.
