A cross-cultural study of phenomenology in Dhaka, Bangladesh and Hanover, New Hampshire. The two locations, realizing after returning from the trip in November 2019, could not be more opposite- Hanover is cold, isolated, educated, clean and grey, and Dhaka, while worse for wear, is brimming with life, color and, most apparently, traffic.
More specifically, I enunciate how one experiences each place (soundscapes, visual schema, dialogue, and styles of transportation) through my treatment of disjunctive sound overlaid contrasting video, parallelisms, snippets of conversation, and natural movement of locomotion. In Dhaka, all but one scene was shot while riding a Bengali Rickshaw, showing firsthand the oft precarious ride. I sit alongside my native aunt who converses with our rickshaw walla in the last scene in Bangla, "Where ever we go, you know the way!" In Hanover, I peruse the institution on foot, solo.
"Crocodile in Water, Tiger on Land" is a Bengali proverb, akin to the idiom "caught between a rock and a hard place", in which I compare two different places I identify with in an attempt to reconcile spatial-temporal schemas that I, and my audience, confront. Neither place can I truly identify with but are inherently descriptive to my being.
