Canberra founder Anthony McGuiness kicked off the conference day reflecting on his own personal journey as a metaphor for a shift in public service delivery to combine both strategy and action to deliver immediate progress and lasting value. As a junior public servant the focus was on solving today’s problems. Later as a management consultant the focus was on a strategy for the future. However, staying solely at either end is frustrating. Instead what is needed is both a focus on action today and a strategy for tomorrow. To bridge this gap we need to learn by doing - no amount of research will tell us how our products or services will play out in the real world, we need to test this with people early and often. Too often we dream big and fail to act, instead “the future isn’t something we wait for, it is made today.”
