Thousands participated in the March for Life rally in the Costa Rican capital,
urging the president not to sign a technical regulation for the performance of
therapeutic abortion in public and private clinics nationwide. The pro life rally
in San Jose was organized by Wake Up Costa Rica, Democracy in Action, and
the Autonomous University of Central America. Many of the opposition leaders
also attended the rally. Costa Rican bishops. conference thanked the secular
organizations for organizing the event. Costa Rica's Criminal Code considers
abortion a crime. Currently, abortions are allowed in Costa Rica only in order to
preserve the life or physical health of the mother. The nations Political
Constitution states in Article 21 that “human life is inviolable.”
