[Disney Imagineering Design Competition Semi-Finalist] COMPASS is a global architectural installation. Sited in three major cities around the world, it is a celebration of our university’s core value to be an institution of learning that is “in and of the city, in and of the world.”
COMPASS is a celebration of our borderlessness and connection. Each site reflects on the important and unique history of its location, while the system as a whole exposes the growing connections and global presence of our university - connections across space, time, and people.Compass is borderless. Open to the public in all three sites, Compass encourages everyone to experience the connected-world vision of our university. The open plan, ample seating, and water features offer the freedom to relax, study, or meditate while surrounded by a global context.Inside Compass visitors are situated in a moment - both in time and space. As the sun arcs across the sky shadows from the gnomon mark the passage of the day.Markers around the structure point outward towards other sites. At night, the beacon light serves as a source of comfort and safety. At the center of each Compass is a world map highlighting where you are, and where the community is, has been, and will be.The interactive feature at the center of each Compass delivers a unique experience for members of the university community. With a campus ID a visitor can “send” a representation of themselves on a journey across the university’s network. Their unique light will gather a small community of others and “embark” on a voyage to another site - at the realtime speed of travel to that site. The path their light takes is unique, persistent, and represents the footprint of our institution’s global network.
