Coagulation cascade is a pathway involving multiple steps to maintain the hemostasis. The intrinsic pathway, extrinsic pathway, and common pathway contains variety of clotting factors which are responsible for carrying out the coagulation process. All these processes get activated by certain signals i.e. exposed endothelial collagen, tissue factor released by endothelial cells.

Now let’s talk about how this Blood clotting mechanism or you can say mechanism of coagulation works. When a vascular injury occurs, platelets arrive first at the site of injury along with coagulation factors, Prostaglandin, enzymes, and Proteins which are contributing to stop the loss of Blood by making the clots.

There are variety of clotting factors which activates each other forming the coag cascade. Initially, the activated platelets will bind to the TF-VII which activates the FIX and FX. Factor Xa alone can activate small amounts of its cofactor, factor V, and generates some thrombin. Thrombin activates fibrinogen to fibrin that forms a firm clot.

After watching this short medical animation video, medical students can definitely answer if someone ask them to describe the process of Blood clotting. Coagulation cascade explained in the form of animation is quite helpful in understanding and revising the medical knowledge.
