OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this project, creating a self portrait, is to familiarize yourself with Photoshop and explore the application’s creative possibilities. You can choose to illustrate yourself however you wish – photography/paint/draw/type – remember just because your end result will be created in Photoshop it doesn’t mean you have to start there. Have an idea of what you would like to create before getting on the computer in order to know what tools you’ll need to create your finished product. It will make the process of learning an application a lot less frustrating. Your portrait doesn’t have to be literal, it can be symbolic and interpretive. As you create keep in mind the elements of design (space, shape, mass, tone, form, line, texture, pattern, colour) and the principles of design (scale, proportion, balance [symmetry], rhythm [pattern/ movement], contrast, unity, and focal point. These will govern the organization and the relationship of the elements within the composition.
