In this extract from Malpaso: The Bad Passage, our guide takes us to a monumental social-realist sculpture celebrating the heroic engineers who “tamed” the Rio Grijalva by building the dam on which they stand. We added animation to our photos of the monument to bring out twentieth century modernist attitudes about humans “controlling” nature, many of which sound tone-deaf now. Today, the heroism of the sculptures seems misguided, even hubristic. Our attitudes have changed and are still changing.
