The philosophers Vinciane Despret and Donna Haraway combine their voices in this audio-visual piece by the filmmaker Diana Toucedo, based on two of their fabulations: Haraway’s The Camille Stories, and Autobiographie d’un poulpe, by Despret.

In an indefinite future, Camille and Ulysses tell the interwoven stories of the first generation of their communities of humans and non-humans: the communities of compost. Camille is associated symbolically with monarch butterflies, whose migration routes and habitats in the US, Mexico and Canada are under threat. Ulysses, like all Ulysses in the community, experiments with the possibility of living in the presence of the extinct octopus by learning the animals’ highly unique gestures, language and forms of sensitivity.

Filmed like an oral tale and a correspondence between the two narrators and their stories, the film follows the ways of living and dying among communities on a damaged planet and their growing proficiency in a new field of scientific knowledge: terolinguistics, or the study of animal languages. The narrators, in harmony with their partners in symbiosis, become increasingly aware of the growth possibilities of the tentacular and metamorphic beings.

This encounter was captured by the filmmaker Diana Toucedo, whose work includes Trinta lumes (2017). With a perspective attuned to the mysteries of the natural world, the blurred limits between what we know and what we intuit, Toucedo joins Haraway and Despret in the construction of this narrative voyage made up of multiple intersecting lines – a string game where speculative fiction and experimental essay merge as symbionts.

Las filósofas Vinciane Despret y Donna Haraway unen sus voces en esta pieza audiovisual de la cineasta Diana Toucedo, basada en dos de sus fábulas, Las historias de Camille, de Haraway y Autobiographie d’un poulpe, de Despret.

En un futuro indeterminado, Camille y Ulysse relatan las historias entrelazadas de las primeras generaciones de sus comunidades de humanos y no humanos, las comunidades del compost. Camille se asocia simbióticamente con mariposas monarcas, las rutas migratorias y los hábitats de las cuales están en peligro en los Estados Unidos, México y Canadá. Ulysse, como todos los Ulysses de la comunidad, experimenta con la posibilidad de vivir en la presencia de los pulpos ya extinguidos, aprendiendo los gestos, el lenguaje y las formas de sensibilidad sumamente particulares.

Filmada como un cuento oral y una correspondencia entre los dos narradores y sus fábulas, la película sigue las formas de vivir y de morir de las comunidades en un planeta malogrado, así como el dominio cada vez mayor de estas comunidades en un nuevo campo científico, la terolingüística, o el estudio de los lenguajes animales. Los narradores, en sintonía con sus compañeros simbióticos, se vuelven cada vez más sensibles a las posibilidades de crecimiento de los seres tentaculares y metamórficos.

Este encuentro fue grabado por la cineasta Diana Toucedo, cuya obra anterior incluye la enigmática Trinta lumes (2018). Con una mirada sensible a los misterios del mundo natural, a las fronteras difusas entre lo que se conoce y lo que se intuye, Toucedo acompaña a Haraway y Despret en la construcción de este viaje narrativo compuesto de múltiples líneas entrecruzadas, un juego del cordel en el que la ficción especulativa y el ensayo experimental se fusionan como simbiontes.
