SFAI Greece Fulbright Fellow, Alex Simopoulos presents a week-long participatory installation at SFAI.
Boundary Drawing is an ever-evolving exhibition, installation and a temporary, open, participatory, experimental mural design studio that invites local artists as well as the public to respond to surfaces of tension, question monuments, imagine new narratives through creative proposals. Visitors are invited to respond to specific surfaces of tension around Santa Fe and New Mexico by sketching proposals for their own murals-monuments. Their responses will be included in the exhibition and documented for the creation of an on-line open-source database.

Marking points of contact between the world.
A celebration of existence, a declaration of resistance.
Sites of public discourse, mourning, celebration.
I am here.
We are here.
We need you, we need witnesses, we need you as a witness. Witness.
Material space and the spaces of representation coexist. We coexist.
Space is a product but more importantly space is a process.
Mapping and re-mapping boundaries and margins.
Disrupting to develop new spatial imaginaries.
New worlds develop within spaces of incidental encounter.
Disrupting in order to see new worlds.
Risk Resistance Indifference. Physical Conceptual Social.
Aesthetic intervention and response never stop.
Re-perform, re-witness, re-perform, re-witness, re-perform, re-witness...
Space allows movement, movement provokes experience.
A lived space allows into being alternative imaginations.
Communication is embodied in the streets.

What is public on the public space?

Walls are governmental objects.
Walls are governmental objects to determine possibilities and impossibilities of encounters.
Walls are boundary making objects.
Walls ask for situational interaction.
Walls are territorial devices.
Walls ask for a focus of attention.
Walls are part for the struggle of visibility.

Territory making is Boundary making.
Boundary drawing. Boundary. Drawing.

Visible is the element in which boundaries are inscribed, in which territorial inscription is operated.
Creating a territory of shared attention renders visible a number of questions.
Surface tension. Affection.
Walls can connect bodies known and unknown through the proliferation of images.
The virtual co-presence of potentials.
A gaze upon the cityscape.
A gaze upon the governmental state.

A design exercise to imagine new possibilities.
Reconciliation is an elsewhere.

“Climbing a ladder with a hole in my pocket, a seed falls and no-one watches, slowly it grows and climbs up every building, until we could see nothing...”
