Day 7. Bloomingdale's Out of This World Holiday
The theme this year at Bloomingdale's on 59th Street is loosely space exploration, either literally or astrologically. There is very nice animation, and the clever use of robots in two windows, one where the robots put ornaments on a gold tree (Finishing Touches), and the other where the robots play Christmas songs (Robot Revelers).
The first window, 3, 2, 1, ... Blast Off! extends the nose of the rocket ship outside the window (if you recall, Macy's put the nose of the golden retriever outside the window, too ... but you can't touch the rocket nose unless you're really, really tall). Shimmer and Shine has a very clever use of revolving doors. A Stellar Soiree looks as if a re-enactment of an Andy Warhol party is taking place. A Celestial Path has what appears to be a circus act.
I visited inside the store briefly. Scattered around the main level are mannequins depicting Bloomingdale's interpretation of the zodiac signs (I was unimpressed by Virgo, so didn't explore further). I ran upstairs to the second floor, and got to see a spacesuit. I understand there are more windows on Third Avenue, but I wasn't inspired to look further.
