For the Spring 2022 season, we’ve been exploring the roots of the infamous
Woman’s Building in Los Angeles – formed in 1973 in an act of protest. The Women’s
Building offered a safe haven for feminist, lesbian, and bisexual women artists, who
yearned to create their own space outside the realm of traditional male-dominated art
and cultural circles/institutions.
 
This collection is inspired by the book Insurgent Muse, life and art at the
woman’s building by Terry Wolverton and the feminist artists of the 70s, who helped
found the Woman’s Building as well as paving the way for contemporary artists
they’ve inspired, including Ebony G. Patterson. This collection strings the efforts that
gave rise to the feminist movement in the art world, that created a platform for
today’s female artists.
